Project: Vermiculture
Description
The vermiponics system is constructed in the forest garden of the Biospheric Project in the middle of a high density urban area. This is the first of its kind producing high quality compost and leachate in the area of Salford. Where as normally these products need to be imported from outside the city now they are produced locally can even be distributed by foot. This greatly reduces the energy needs for producing food in an urban setting.
As part of an interrelated network of ecological systems the vermiculture system plays a vital role and is placed in the best relative location possible. It provides the soil and vegetation of the roof top garden and the forest garden with rich and fertile compost, leachate and vermicompost tea. Within the vermiponics system it provides crucial minerals to the water circulated in the system. And for the aquaponics system it provides food for the fish.
The input for the vermicompost system is locally sourced from the veg. box scheme the Wholebox, the shop 78 steps, local residents, staff and the food production systems at the Biospheric Project. This way we have created a much more efficient waste management system then the area has ever known.
